Creative Waves: Permission to Begin Again

Creative Waves: Permission to Begin Again

Artists and creatives all go through creative waves. There are times when inspiration is all around. Exhibitions are on the calendar, grant proposals are getting submitted, art is being made. There are also times when it feels like creativity is running dry, you receive more rejection letters than acceptance letters and you feel like not making art.

Some of us even step away from making work. This may be for a variety of reasons, not just because you’ve lost your inspiration. Health, financial, family issues affect all artists and can be reasons why we need to begin again with our creative endeavors.

Wherever you are right now in your career, you have permission to begin again. You will always be an artist regardless of how long it’s been since you last made something. It’s never too late to begin again, you never know what the waves of creativity will bring to shore.

As you begin…a large commitment to art, a goal for a new studio, or thinking about showing in an exhibition may be too much right now. A simple commitment of showing up at the canvas, at the potter’s wheel, or at the piano keys is all you need to do. Ease back into your creativity, don’t scare it off.

  • What do other current professional or re-emerging artists find as helpful Mindsets when returning to the piano keys, the voice, the canvas?

    • Good question Kirsten! Hopefully more artists comment and share their experience and mindset when beginning again. What do you do to help begin again?
